Sunday Roasts at the Fox
Looking for a Sunday roast in the Docklands?
Sunday roast. Pause for a sigh. Sunday roasts are one of our favourite meals of the week. Not sure why. Maybe it’s because it marks the end of the week (or the start, depending on how you look at things!) or it’s the rich tapestry of tastes on the plate. Or maybe because it’s great to enjoy a roast dinner in the company of friends or family or just the two of us.
What could be better than a traditional Sunday roast in London?
The Fox ExCeL delivers a great Sunday lunch. Firstly, you’re in a traditional Docklands warehouse in the heart of one of the most iconic areas of London, packed with history and lots of modern entertainment. You’re just round the corner from City Airport or may be nearby having visited the attractions of the ExCeL Centre or the O2 arena. All in all, the location is great.
Secondly, it’s the gravy. Others may tell you that it’s the crispy roast potatoes, the seasoned greens or roasted vegetables. Or even the Yorkshire pudding or the beef, chicken or vegetarian option of veg wellington. But for me - it’s definitely the gravy. And yes, of course, there is a vegetarian option for the gravy too.
Sunday roast is part of the heart of Britain
Did you know that during the 18th Century, the French started calling Englishmen "rosbifs" thanks to our love of roast beef, the traditional meat in a good Sunday roast? It’s also why the Yeomen of the Guard - the royal bodyguards based at the Tower of London - have affectionately been known as "Beefeaters" since the 15th century.
But the traditional Sunday roast has been around since the reign of King Henry VII (the one before Henry VIII and all his wives). Whilst the elites of their day cooked their roast beef on a spit in their large fireplaces, the less well off had to drop their weekly roast at the bakers on the way to church. The roast was cooked in the bread ovens (as bread was not baked on a Sunday).
